The world was so new, so pretty and full,
Things were so shiny, so nice and peaceful,
The only thing I had to worry about,
Was avoiding making my parents shout,
But now, the secret is out.
The world was my home, a safe place where I lived,
A place where toys were, a place fun for a kid,
Where strawberries, tangy and sweet in their taste,
Grew abundant in yards where bunnies would chase,
But now, I've seen its true face.
White dresses for brides and black tuxes for grooms,
Pink curtains and carpets in little girls' rooms,
When nothing was dirty, and no death occurred,
When stories of prince's were more than just heard.
When candy solved every problem that arose,
When drugs were a myth, something made up in shows,
When babies were sent here by magic and love,
When no one was left alone, and we had faith in those above.
When we could believe every word someone said,
When trust was a gift given freely, placed on everyone's head,
When dreams could come true, no matter what,
When all things were possible, no door was shut.
When boys were just friends and girls were too,
A time when independence was something new,
When we played with our mom's and laughed with our dads,
When we didn't listen to any of the fads.
A time when those older seemed so much more cool,
When we napped and had play time in our little school,
When we all, no matter the sex or the race, were the same,
When television was everything but plain and lame.
A time when our worries were much simpler things,
When we all believed we could grow beautiful wings,
When college and work were things too far away,
When we closed our eyes wishing the day would stay.
But the world changed sometime between then and now,
More cruelty seeped in and we still don't know how,
One day we just saw that things weren't as perfect as they seemed,
We realized that dreams could only be dreamed.
Girls became women and boys became men,
Love became something more than Barbie and Ken,
Babies were born even when they weren't wanted,
And people were killed, raped, and left haunted.
The shiny new world turned a plain looking grey,
We cherish the night as much as the day,
Our worries grow larger as our time grows shorter,
We learned the true value of a quarter.
Princes would never come save us from villains,
Princesses never chose men for their feelings,
Some kids were in and others were out,
We didn't get what we wanted with a cry and a pout.
The world grows colder as we grow too,
Things are less shiny; less lovely and new,
And though we see evil happen day after day,
We still hope that some beauty will shine through; come to stay.
