Some start with a safe haven, a place for from harm,
Protected from the world and it's cruelty.
Then one day, unexpected, unaware,
We are pulled from that haven which we loved so dearly.
Waiting for us are bright lights and machines,
And many people waiting to hear our screams.
It's cold an uninviting at first,
We are handed from one person to the next.
Then we are cradled and embraced in warmth,
Soft noises are made and we are loved, some of us.
Some of us grow, innocent and unaware of the world,
Everything is candy coated, and life is generally good.
The worst thing to happen to us, is to be denied what we want,
Fall, get bruises, scraps, and cuts.
We play with our toys and our friends all day,
And when bedtime comes, mom and dad scare the monsters away.
We have no need for decision making or planning,
Unless we decide what color outfit we're wearing.
The hard things are dealt with for us,
And we believe there is not one person we can't trust.
There is no evil and all are our brothers,
Everyone cares and people are nice to one another.
As we grow older, the perfect world fades,
There is dying, murder, sickness and pain.
There are cruel people who enjoy to hurt,
And nature seems to be the work of the devil, not God.
We are hurt by more than just falling and tripping, cuts and physical pain,
There is now rejection, loss, failure, and shame.
We lose the innocents of childhood,
With everything we experience, hear, and learn.
There are those of us, though, that never had a safe haven,
From the start we were abused, mistreated, and poisoned.
Whether mom drank to hide her pain,
Or did drugs to keep loneliness away.
Whether when we were born, we were unwanted and shamed,
Or mommy or daddy got mad one day.
For some of us, innocence was taken away,
As soon as our heart beat and blood ran through our veins.
Our childhood was filled with fear and hate,
There was never shock when we learned the world's fate.
What should have been a time of innocence,
Became a time of fear, despair and sadness.
Every child has the right to live in peace,
To live in a perfect world, shielded from reality.
Childhood is one time, one thing, that we should be able to look upon,
With glee, and remembrance, without hesitation.
Childhood is a time of imagination and freedom,
Not a time of independence or maturation,
Everyone has the right to innocence.
Let children be children, let them smile,
Let them all be innocent, just for awhile.
